Rainn Wilson says failing to become 'movie star' was 'very hard on my ego'
Rainn Wilson is reflecting candidly on the toll of never quite breaking through into film stardom after his nine-season run as Dwight Schrute on The Office, revealing in a September interview that the experience left lasting emotional scars.
"I've been able to play a lot of really cool roles, mostly independent films, but I did not become a movie star," Wilson said.
"And it was very hard on my ego, and it hurt and stung for a long time."
Wilson pointed to the 2008 comedy The Rocker, which he filmed midway through his Office tenure, as a key turning point that shaped Hollywood's perception of him.
The film underperformed at the box office, and Wilson recalled the industry response being swift and unambiguous.
"And then there was the immediate Hollywood just kind of like, 'All right, he's not a movie star.'"
He explained the broader dynamics of the industry that made recovering from that kind of box office disappointment especially difficult, "People that star in big movies that bomb, they don't get other chances."
Wilson has spoken previously about how consumed he was during his Office years with the idea of achieving the kind of film career enjoyed by comedic peers like Jack Black and Will Ferrell, admitting in an earlier interview with Bill Maher's Club Random podcast that he spent "several years really mostly unhappy because it wasn't enough," despite starring on an Emmy-nominated hit alongside Steve Carell, Jenna Fischer and John Krasinski.
He recalled fixating at the time on financial comparisons as well, saying, "I wanted millions. I was a TV star, but I wanted to be a movie star. It was never enough."
Since The Office ended in 2013, Wilson has continued working steadily across film and television, with credits including Cooties, The Meg, Blackbird and Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, and has said he's since come to better appreciate the lasting cultural connection audiences still have with the sitcom.
