Chris Brown celebrates despite $13M verdict in housekeeper dog attack case
Chris Brown doesn’t appear too bothered after being ordered to pay nearly $13 million to his housekeeper after she was attacked by one of his security dogs in 2020.
The verdict, given on Tuesday, June 30, followed a two-week trial over an incident in which the R&B star’s housekeeper, Maria Avila, was mauled by a 200-pound Caucasian shepherd.
According to Billboard, the jury ruled that Brown and his company, Black Pyramid LLC, must pay housekeeper Avila $12.9 million in damages for negligence. Her sister, Patricia Avila, was awarded $885,000 for emotional distress, while Avila's husband, Oscar Olivo, received $50,000.
Despite the huge legal blow for Brown — who has had a history of trouble with the law — the Grammy-winner took to Instagram to celebrate a new career milestone: becoming the best selling male R&B/ Pop artist in the United States in RIAA history.
Brown, 37, didn’t add a caption. Instead, he let the numbers do the talking as he beat out Michael Jackson, Justin Bieber, The Weeknd, and Bruno Mars.
Back in the courtroom, Avila testified she “will never be the same again” after being attacked by Brown’s dog, according to Rolling Stone.
She said the attack left her with severe injuries to her face and arm, lasting nerve damage, post-traumatic stress disorder and chronic pain. Avila also testified that she no longer has the strength to work as a housekeeper.
Brown testified that the dog was kept for security rather than as a pet. He acknowledged fleeing the property after the attack and said he avoided calling 911 “because of how my image is and always used. I didn’t want a misleading story, or like a circus, from my status.”
