Stephen Colbert announces Barack Obama interview before he bids farewell to show

Stephen Colbert is all set to interview Barack Obama as his late-night show nears its end.

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert host announced the big news during Thursday’s show that he will sit down on the set with the former President of the United States of America on May 5.

“Folks before we get started, I have a quick but exciting announcement,” Colbert told his viewers.

“Tuesday, May 5, here on ‘The Late Show,’ in his first interview from the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, I will be sitting down with former President Barack Obama." he continued.

However, Colbert has interviewed Obama in the past, when he made an appearance on Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report three times.

Colbert has spoken with Obama on The Late Show in 2016 and 2020.

The interview will be one of the final episodes of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert as the show is set to end on May 21.

In a previous update, CBS announced that the late night show is ending due to financial reasons, as they have lost around $40 million, followed by the announcement of the final episode date in January.

In a July 2025 monologue of the show, Colbert said, “I’m not being replaced. This is all just going away and I do want to say that the folks at CBS have been great partners. I’m so grateful to the Tiffany Network for giving me this chair and this beautiful theater to call home. And of course I’m grateful to you, the audience, who have joined us every night in here out there all around the world.”
