Russell Brand blasts ex-wife Katy Perry's new beau Justin Trudeau
Russell Brand is not happy with who Katy Perry is currently dating — and it’s not just because she’s his ex-wife.
Appearing on the Megyn Kelly Show on Wednesday, April 22, the former actor obliterated former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who began dating the pop star last summer after her split with longtime boyfriend Orlando Bloom. Surprisingly, Brand had no issue with Perry’s Bloom, calling him “brilliant.”
But when it comes to Trudeau, who he labelled “Fidel Castro’s spawn,” Brand takes issue with his performative politics, including the time “he invited an actual Nazi in the Canadian Parliament.”
Brand joked that fans should “keep checking” on Perry and Trudeau, as “she could come to her senses any minute.”
The comedian also reflected on his own relationship with Perry. The pair tied the knot in October 2010, but he filed for divorce just over a year later in December 2011. And Brand takes “total responsibility” for why the marriage failed.
“It was my fault. I pushed to get married early because I felt inadequate and insecure and that I wasn’t enough and that if I was married to her, I’d somehow be a better person and more important,” he admitted, noting that his expectations put a lot of pressure on Perry, who was “just a normal person” at the end of the day.
Ultimately, Brand felt “lonely” in his marriage, especially as Perry’s career began to skyrocket.
Regardless, Brand continues to have nothing but praise for Perry, whom he called “really lovely” and “a very beautiful person” who is “incredibly driven and worked really, really hard.”
